Employee Union : Organization and Action
The Union of Employees of "The Ethniki" was founded in August of 1969 and has played a leading role in the union movement of insurance companies since then. It is still the most powerful member of the Greek Federation of Insurance Employee Unions (O.A.S.E.). Its members are approximately 1.500 employees and the Union Council consists of 11 members. According to the recent change of its Articles of Association, from the year of 2.000 the Union Council will consist of 13 members. The Union's long action created the preconditions for employees' financial and structural achievements. It is substantially represented in the Executive Council of O.A.S.E., in the Labour Centre of Athens (E.K.A.) and in the Greek General Confederation of Labour (G.S.E.E.). In the scope of union action in "The Ethniki", the employees participate in the Company's Board of Directors with two representatives. This representation has offered a lot to the employees and it has ensured their right and prompt information about the Company's critical matters. Also, the employees of "The Ethniki" have their own Social Insurance Fund called T.A.P.E. and they are represented in its Council by two employees.
The representatives for both the Company's Board of Directors and T.A.P.E. are elected by the employees every second year by general election. During the last five years, a 7-member Work Council has been created in "The Ethniki", on the Union of Employees' own initiative. It is one of the few companies in Greece, and the only one in the domain of insurance, that proceeded to the establishment of a Work Council.
The Union Council signs every year Collective Labour Agreements with the employer, improving continually employees' situation. It has created group/collective contracts for the Company's personnel, ensuring better Medicare, a lump sum benefit on retirement and retirement program. Both employer and employees share the cost of these contracts.
For the accomplishment of its objectives, the Union of Employees uses many scientific experts on labour disputes, social insurance and settlement of business matters. In the last two years, after the merger of the insurance companies that belong to the Group of the National Bank of Greece, ("The Ethniki", Astir, Panellinios, ETEVA) it has strengthened even more its presence in the union movement in the insurance domain. The merge of these 4 companies was the biggest that ever took place in the domain of insurance and it preceded the merge in other sectors of economy. The Union of Employees played crucial role in the merging procedure in order to ensure both the company's and employees' interests. The Union of Employees participated in 17 committees that were created for the settlement of merging functional matters. Also, the business consulting company "KANTOR" was engaged in order to carry out step-by-step the critical appreciation of the researches elaborated by the employer's researching company "DELOITTE & TOUCH".
Apart from its union activities, the Union of Employees of "The Ethniki", takes an active part in national and social matters, such as the support that was provided with other Employees' Unions to Bosnia and, recently, to Serbia (financial support, delegation of company executives to these countries, hospitality to children in Greek holiday camps). Also, it has created its own Blood Bank, contributing in this way to a very substantial social work. Its cultural action is particularly great and, today, it owns a big lending film library and CD library. Every year offers summer holidays to a great number of employees and organises trips abroad.UNION COUNCIL
